A Milestone... How many of us know about it? Aug 24, 2010 2:29 am

It’s actually hugely difficult to win a PGA Tour title, even if the Wyndham Championship is not exactly the Augusta. The US PGA Tour competition is intense and at the top of the pyramid which one reaches after going through the grind of the Asian and European golfing circuits.

To win this one—on a tour where hundreds of equally competent competitors slug it out—is one of those highly creditable achievements that requires more than the passing mention.

Consider the odds against Arjun Atwal, who won the Wyndham Classic in North Carolina on Sunday. No Indian has ever won a PGA Tour title before; at 37, Atwal is not really in the category of an upcoming player, he had to qualify for this event on Monday after losing his US PGA card that allows automatic qualification, no qualifier had won the title in 24 years, he has battled career-threatening shoulder injuries for the last few years and was three years ago, being investigated for a vehicular homicide.

If victories in sport are often scored in the head than through sheer prowess, this is an example, in a rare sport in which you are often competing only with yourself.

Atwal made nearly a million dollars in prize money for Sunday’s win, but then it was never about money. He lives in Florida, was driving a BMW M6 coupe when the accident happened in 2007, and has Tiger Woods as a friend and practice partner. He was also never a struggler financially—growing up in Kolkata, the son of a builder started playing at 14 at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, went to the US to university and has lived there since.

But Atwal has had to go through the typical professional grinds of the Indian, Asian and European tours since the late 1990s before this moment. He had to struggle in the lower rung Nationwide Tour in 2008 after injuries and the accident laid him low. He has won everywhere and he has persevered.

It is also perhaps justified that at a time when golf is getting a series of new champions and players in their late 30s and 40s are more consistent, an Indian should get his name on the trophy.

yes.. First Time an Indian Winning on PGA Tour.

Chennai: Heavy rains are likely to lash coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu during the next two days as cyclone 'Laila' which further intensified and lay centred in the Bay of Bengal around 400 km east of Chennai, is expected to cross the Andhra coast on Thursday.

"Latest satellite images and radar observation indicates that cyclonic storm 'Laila' lies centred at about 400 km east of Chennai. This system is likely to intensify further and move in a west northwesterly direction and cross the Andhra coast between Ongole and Vishakapatnam in the early hours of Thursday," Met officials said.

They said scattered heavy and isolated very heavy rains would occur over coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated heavy rain may also occur over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Wednesday night.

According to them, strong wind with speeds reaching 65-75 kmph was likely to commence along Andhra coast from Wednesday night. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph may begin along north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast from Wednesday night.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as strong surface winds from Southwesterly to Westerly direction with speeds reaching 45-55 kmph were likely off the Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.

A focus on the Iberian Peninsula: Spain and Portugal in the spotlight
Iberian neighbours Spain and Portugal are not a pair of countries known for their reserve. Their festivals are amongst the brightest and maddest, their artists and writers passionate and skilled, and their food and wine culture the envies of the world. And yet in India, until now, very little of this culture has spread beyond the old Portuguese enclaves of Goa, Daman and Diu.

Spain is the bigger and more influential of the two, and until now her food, wine and unique ‘tapas’ dining style has been the most underrepresented of all the major European gastronomies. However, with the culinary influence of Goa on the rise, and new Spanish restaurants opening in Delhi and across the country, the time seems ripe to introduce to our members this fantastic corner of Europe, where Mediterranean and Atlantic, Latin, African and Northern cuisines and cultures collide.

We begin with the classic styles from both nations; three Spanish wines, a Crianza and a Reserva, both made from Tempranillo, one of the great aging red grape varieties. The third Spanish wine is a White Rioja, made from the classic white grape Viura. Representing Portugal, we have the flagship, classically styled Vinho Verde from the company that spearheaded the return of Portuguese still wine to the global stage.

We also have stunning wines from the hinterland of Chateuneuf-du-Pape, in France’s Rhone region; a lovely, rich Latin American Cabernet and top-end Chardonnay, and, most aristocratic of all Italian wines, an exquisite Barolo, from Piedmont. Enjoy ‒ we certainly plan to!

A SHAME..... But again .... Jan 8, 2010 7:40 am

A policeman, R Vetrivel, in Tamil Nadu lies on the road begging for help. The 44-year-old's legs have been chopped off by gangsters.

A government convoy passes by this part of Tirunelvelli. It includes two ministers - for Sports and Health - in the Tamil Nadu government. The convoy stops. Neither of the ministers step out of their cars. With them are bureaucrats - a Collector and a Health Secretary.

The Collector, M Jayaraman, finally gets out of his car after dithering for eight minutes. But nobody offers to take the wounded inspector to hospital. Finally, the Collector phones for an ambulance. It doesn't arrive.

Twenty minutes later, the cop is placed in one of the cars (the ministers still don't offer theirs). The policeman dies en route to the hospital.

After the ambulance drives away, the Health Minister finally gets out of his car. When contacted later for a comment, he angrily asks the NDTV correspondent to leave him alone.

Tamil Nadu's Health Minister is M. R. K. Panneerselvam. The Minister for Environment and Sports is Thiru T. P. M. Mohideen Khan.

The senior bureaucrat, VK Sunburaj, who was in the convoy, says there's nothing wrong with what transpired. "We did our best possible in that situation. It takes twenty minutes for ambulance to come...Police did a good job," he said to NDTV in a phone interview.

Wonder where our politicians taking us.

THREE OF YOU... YOUR COMING GENERATIONS WILL SUFFER FOR SIN THAT YOU DID TODAY.. CURSE OF AN INDIAN.

Baby Plane ........ Jul 31, 2009 5:22 am

A mother and her young inquisitive son were flying Jet Airways from Mumbai to Delhi. The son (who had been looking out the window turned to his mother and asked, “If dogs have baby dogs and cats have baby cats, why don't planes have baby planes?”

The mother, who was conservative and being a rather shy Indian lady in the matter of the bird and bees, couldn't think of an answer, told her son to ask the flight attendant. So the boy dutifully asked the flight attendant, “If dogs have baby dogs and cats have baby cats, why don't planes have baby planes?”

The flight attendant responded, “Did your mother tell you to ask me that?” The little boy admitted that she did. “Well, then, tell your mother that there are no baby planes because Jet Airways always pulls out on time. Now, let your mother explain that to you.”
